Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 229

Let a\mathfrak{a} be a semi-simple Lie algebra, h\mathfrak{h} a Cartan subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}, and s\mathfrak{s} a semi-simple subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a} containing h\mathfrak{h}. Show that:

(a,h)(\mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{h}) is split ⇐⇒(s,h)\Leftarrow \Rightarrow (\mathfrak{s},\mathfrak{h}) is split. Construct an example in which a\mathfrak{a} is splittable but s\mathfrak{s} is not. (Take a=sp(4,k)\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{p}(4, k) and s=sl(2,k′)\mathfrak{s}=\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k'), where k′k' is a quadratic extension of k.k.)
