Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 231

Let p\mathfrak{p} and q\mathfrak{q} be two parabolic subalgebras of a semi-simple Lie algebra a\mathfrak{a}, and let n\mathfrak{n} be the nilpotent radical of p\mathfrak{p}. Show that m=(p∩q)+n\mathfrak{m}= (\mathfrak{p}\cap \mathfrak{q}) +\mathfrak{n} is a parabolic subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}. (Reduce to the case where a\mathfrak{a} is split and q\mathfrak{q} is a Borel subalgebra; choose a Cartan subalgebra h\mathfrak{h} contained in p∩q\mathfrak{p}\cap \mathfrak{q}, and determine the subset P of the corresponding root system such that m=h+gP.\mathfrak{m}=\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{g}^P.)
