Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 4. Split semi-simple Lie algebra defined by a reduced root system

(i) The Lie algebra a+\mathfrak{a}_+ is generated by the family (xα)α∈B(x_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in B}.

(ii) The Lie algebra a−\mathfrak{a}_- is generated by the family (x−α)α∈B(x_{-\alpha})_{\alpha\in B}.

(iii) The family (hα)α∈B(h_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in B} is a basis of the vector space a0\mathfrak{a}^0.

(iv) The vector space a\mathfrak{a} is the direct sum of a+,a0,a−\mathfrak{a}_+,\mathfrak{a}^0,\mathfrak{a}_-.

Let r\mathfrak{r} (resp. n\mathfrak{n}) be the Lie subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a} generated by (xα)α∈B(x_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in B} (resp. (x−α)α∈B(x_{-\alpha})_{\alpha\in B}), and h\mathfrak{h} the vector subspace of a\mathfrak{a} generated by (hα)α∈B(h_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in B}. Since the xαx_{\alpha} are homogeneous elements of a+,r\mathfrak{a}_+,\mathfrak{r} is a graded subalgebra of a+\mathfrak{a}_+; hence, [h,r]⊂r[\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{r}]\subset \mathfrak{r}, so h+r\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{r} is a subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}; since

[x−α,xβ]=δαβhα [x_{-\alpha}, x_{\beta}] =\delta_{\alpha \beta}h_{\alpha}

[x−α,r]⊂h+r[x_{-\alpha},\mathfrak{r}]\subset \mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{r} for all α∈B\alpha \in B. Similarly, n\mathfrak{n} is a graded subalgebra of a−\mathfrak{a}_-, one has [h,n]⊂n,h+n[\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{n}]\subset \mathfrak{n},\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{n} is a subalgebra of n\mathfrak{n}, and [xα,n]⊂h+n[x_{\alpha},\mathfrak{n}]\subset \mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{n} for all α∈B\alpha \in B. Put a′=r+h+n\mathfrak{a}'=\mathfrak{r}+\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{n}. The preceding shows that a′\mathfrak{a}' is stable under ad xαx_{\alpha}, ad hαh_{\alpha} and ad x−αx_{-\alpha} for all α∈B\alpha \in B, and hence is an ideal of a\mathfrak{a}. Since a′\mathfrak{a}' contains xα,hα,x−αx_{\alpha}, h_{\alpha}, x_{-\alpha} for all α∈B,a′=a\alpha \in B,\mathfrak{a}'=\mathfrak{a}. It follows from this that the inclusions r⊂a+,h⊂a0\mathfrak{r}\subset \mathfrak{a}_+,\mathfrak{h}\subset \mathfrak{a}^0, n⊂a−\mathfrak{n}\subset \mathfrak{a}_- are equalities, which proves the proposition.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
