Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 261

a) Show the equivalence of the properties:

(i) g\mathfrak{g} has no nilpotent element ≠0\not= 0.

(ii) g\mathfrak{g} has no parabolic subalgebra ≠g\not=\mathfrak{g}.

(Use Cor. 2 of Th. 1.)

Such an algebra is called anisotropic.

b) Let p\mathfrak{p} be a minimal parabolic subalgebra of g,r\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{r} the radical of p\mathfrak{p}, and s=p/r\mathfrak{s}=\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{r}. Show that s\mathfrak{s} is anisotropic. (Remark that, if q\mathfrak{q} is a parabolic subalgebra of s\mathfrak{s}, the inverse image of q\mathfrak{q} in p\mathfrak{p} is a parabolic subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}, cf. §3, Exerc. 5a5a).).)
