Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 266

Let (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be a split simple Lie algebra, and B a basis of R(g,h)R(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}). The simple g\mathfrak{g}-modules E(λ),λ∈P++E(\lambda ),\lambda \in P_{++} -- {0}\{0\}, of minimum dimension are those for which λ\lambda is one of the following weights:

ϖ1(A1);ϖ1\varpi_1(A_1);\varpi_1 and ϖl(Al,l≥2);ϖ1(Bl\varpi_l(A_l,l\geq 2);\varpi_1(B_l and Cl,l≥2);ϖ1,ϖ3C_l,l\geq 2);\varpi_1, \varpi_3 and ϖ4\varpi_4 (D4);ϖ1(Dl,l≥5);ϖ1(D_4);\varpi_1(D_l,l\geq 5);\varpi_1 and ϖ6(E6);ϖ7(E7);ϖ8(E8);ϖ4(F4);ϖ1(G2)\varpi_6(E_6);\varpi_7(E_7);\varpi_8(E_8);\varpi_4(F_4);\varpi_1(G_2).

Any two such modules can be transformed into each other by an automorphism of g\mathfrak{g}.

Type E8E_8 is the only one for which the adjoint representation is of minimum dimension.
