Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

The notations are those of no. 4.IV, type Dl(l≥2)D_l(l\geq 2).

a) Let xx and yy be the elements of ⋀lV\bigwedge^lV defined by

x=e1∧⋯∧el−1∧elx=e_1\wedge \cdots \wedge e_{l-1}\wedge e_l and y=e1∧⋯∧el−1∧e−ly=e_1\wedge \cdots \wedge e_{l-1}\wedge e_{-l}.

The element xx is primitive of weight 2ϖl2\varpi_l and yy is primitive of weight 2ϖl−12\varpi_{l-1}. The submodule X (resp. Y) of ⋀lV\bigwedge^lV generated by xx (resp. yy) is isomorphic to E(2ϖl)E(2\varpi_l) (resp. E(2ϖl−1)E(2\varpi_{l-1})). Show, by calculating dimensions, that ⋀lV=\bigwedge^lV = X⊕YX\oplus Y; in particular, ⋀lV\bigwedge^lV is the sum of two non-isomorphic simple modules. b) Let e=e1∧⋯∧el∧e−1∧⋯∧e−l∈⋀2lVe=e_1\wedge \cdots \wedge e_l\wedge e_{-1}\wedge \cdots \wedge e_{-l}\in \bigwedge^{2l}V, and Ψl\Psi_l the extension of Ψ\Psi to ⋀lV\bigwedge^lV. Let z∈⋀lVz\in \bigwedge^lV. Prove the equivalences:

z∈X⇐⇒z∧t=Ψl(z,t)ez\in X\Leftarrow \Rightarrow z\wedge t=\Psi_l(z, t)e for all t∈⋀lVt\in \bigwedge^lV

z∈Y⇐⇒z∧t=−Ψl(z,t)ez\in Y\Leftarrow \Rightarrow z\wedge t=-\Psi_l(z, t)e for all t∈⋀lVt\in \bigwedge^lV.

(If X′X' and Y′Y' denote the subspaces defined by the right-hand sides, prove first that X′X' and Y′Y' are stable under g\mathfrak{g} and contain xx and yy, respectively.) c) Assume that zz is pure (Algebra, Chap. III, §11, no. 13), and denote by MzM_z the ll-dimensional subspace of V associated to it. Show that MzM_z is totally isotropic if and only if zz belongs to X or to Y. (Use the fact that, when MzM_z is totally isotropic, there exists an orthogonal transformation that transforms it into MxM_x; when MzM_z is not totally isotropic, construct an ll-vector tt such that z∧t=0,Ψl(z,t)=1z\wedge t= 0, \Psi_l(z, t) = 1, and apply b) above.) When z∈Xz\in X (resp. z∈Yz\in Y), the dimension of Mx/(Mx∩Mz)M_x/(M_x\cap M_z) is an even (resp. odd) integer, cf. Algebra, Chap. IX, §6, Exerc. 18d)18d).

d) Let ss be a direct (resp. inverse) similarity of V. Show that ⋀ls\bigwedge^ls leaves X and Y stable (resp. interchanges X and Y).
