Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 4. Root system associated to a compact group

By Prop. 4, the map f→Γ(f)(2πi)f \rightarrow \Gamma (f)(2\pi i) from M(U,S)M(\mathbf{U},S) to Γ(S)\Gamma (S) is an isomorphism; if a∈X(S)=M(S,U)a\in X(S) = M(S,\mathbf{U}) and f∈M(U,S)f\in M(\mathbf{U},S), then the composite a∘f∈M(U,U)a\circ f\in M(\mathbf{U},\mathbf{U}) is the endomorphism u→uru \rightarrow u^r, where r=⟨a,Γ(f)(2πi)⟩r=\langle a, \Gamma (f)(2\pi i)\rangle. We shall identify M(U,U)=X(U)M(\mathbf{U},\mathbf{U}) = X(\mathbf{U}) with Z\mathbf{Z} from now on, the element rr of Z\mathbf{Z} being associated to the endomorphism u→uru \rightarrow u^r; thus, with the notations above,

a∘f=⟨a,Γ(f)(2πi)⟩ a\circ f=\langle a, \Gamma (f)(2\pi i)\rangle

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
