Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 413

Let H be a connected closed subgroup of G and h\mathfrak{h} its Lie algebra.

12^{12}The integers kik_i are in fact the exponents of R(G,T)R(G,T). Cf. J. LERAY, Sur

l’homologie des groupes de Lie, des espaces homogènes et des espaces fibrés principaux, Colloque de Topologie de Bruxelles (1950), pp. 101-115. a) Let α\alpha be an element of h∗\mathfrak{h}^* invariant under H; show that there exists an element α‾\overline{\alpha} of g∗\mathfrak{g}^* invariant under H whose restriction to h\mathfrak{h} is equal to α\alpha. Show that the element dα‾∈d\overline{\alpha}\in Alt2(g)^2(\mathfrak{g}) is annihilated by i(η)i(\eta ) and θ(η)\theta (\eta ) for all η∈h\eta \in \mathfrak{h}, and that its class in H2(G/H)H^2(G/H) does not depend on the choice of α‾\overline{\alpha}. This defines a homomorphism φ:H1(H)→H2(G/H)\varphi : H^1(H)\rightarrow H^2(G/H).

b) Assume from now on that G is semi-simple. Prove that φ\varphi is an isomorphism. c) Prove that H is semi-simple if and only if H2(G/H)=0H^2(G/H) = 0.

d) Without assuming that H is connected, define an isomorphism (h∗)H→(\mathfrak{h}^*)^H\rightarrow H2(G/H)H^2(G/H) (apply bb) to H0)H_0).
