Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Consider the operation of s\mathfrak{s}, via the adjoint representation, on its enveloping algebra UU and on its symmetric algebra S=⨁Sn\mathbf{S}=\bigoplus S^n.

a) Determine the weights of the s\mathfrak{s}-module Sn\mathbf{S}^n. Deduce the following isomorphisms of s\mathfrak{s}-modules:

Sn⟶V(2n)⊕V(2n−4)⊕V(2n−8)⊕⋯⊕V(0)n even \mathbf{S}^n\longrightarrow V(2n)\oplus V(2n-4)\oplus V(2n-8)\oplus\cdots\oplus V(0) \qquad n\text{ even}
Sn⟶V(2n)⊕V(2n−4)⊕V(2n−8)⊕⋯⊕V(2)n odd. \mathbf{S}^n\longrightarrow V(2n)\oplus V(2n-4)\oplus V(2n-8)\oplus\cdots\oplus V(2) \qquad n\text{ odd}.

In particular, the elements of Sn\mathbf{S}^n invariant under s\mathfrak{s} form a space of dimension 11 (resp. 00) if nn is even (resp. odd).

b) Show that the subalgebra of S\mathbf{S} consisting of the elements invariant under s\mathfrak{s} is the polynomial algebra k[Γ]k[\Gamma], where Γ=H2−4X−X+\Gamma=H^2-4X_-X_+. The module Sn/Γ.Sn−2\mathbf{S}^n/\Gamma.\mathbf{S}^{n-2} is isomorphic to V(2n)V(2n).

c) Show that the centre of UU is the polynomial algebra k[C]k[C], where CC is the element defined in Exerc. 1 (use bb) and the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem).
