Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 251

Put l=l= rk(g\mathfrak{g}),N=,N = dim(g\mathfrak{g}). If x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g}, define ai(x),0≤i≤Na_i(x), 0\leq i\leq N, by the formula

det(T + ad xx) =∑i=0NTN−iai(x)=\sum_{i=0}^NT^{N-i}a_i(x).

The function aia_i thus defined is homogeneous polynomial of degree ii, and invariant under Aut(g\mathfrak{g}). If x∈hx\in \mathfrak{h} and i≤N−l,ai(x)i\leq N-l,a_i(x) is the iith elementary symmetric function of the α(x),α∈R\alpha (x),\alpha \in R; in particular, aN−l(x)=∏α∈Rα(x)a_{N-l}(x) =\prod_{\alpha\in R}\alpha (x).

Construct an example in which the aia_i do not generate the algebra of polynomial functions on g\mathfrak{g} invariant under Aut(g\mathfrak{g}).
