Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let a\mathfrak{a} be a nilpotent Lie algebra, x∈a,n∈N,p∈Nx\in \mathfrak{a}, n\in \mathbf{N}, p\in \mathbf{N}. There exists l∈Nl\in \mathbf{N} such that xly1...yn∈U(a)xpx^ly_1. . . y_n\in U(\mathfrak{a})x^p for all y1,...,yn∈ay_1, . . . , y_n\in \mathfrak{a}.

b) Let λ,μ∈h∗\lambda , \mu\in \mathfrak{h}^*, and α∈B\alpha \in B be such that

Z(sαμ−ρ)⊂Z(μ−ρ)⊂Z(λ−ρ) Z(s_{\alpha}\mu-\rho )\subset Z(\mu-\rho )\subset Z(\lambda -\rho )

Assume that λ∈P\lambda \in P. Let p=λ(Hα)∈Zp=\lambda (H_{\alpha})\in \mathbf{Z}. Show that:

b1)b_1) If p≤0p\leq 0, then Z(λ−ρ)⊂Z(sαλ−ρ)Z(\lambda -\rho )\subset Z(s_{\alpha}\lambda -\rho ).

b2)b_2) If p>0p >0, then Z(sαμ−ρ)⊂Z(sαλ−ρ)⊂Z(λ−ρ)Z(s_{\alpha}\mu-\rho )\subset Z(s_{\alpha}\lambda -\rho )\subset Z(\lambda -\rho ).

(Use aa), and §6, Cor. 1 of Prop. 6.)

c) Let λ∈h∗,α∈R\lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^*, \alpha \in R, and m=λ(Hα)m=\lambda (H_{\alpha}). Assume that m∈Nm\in \mathbf{N}. Show that

Z(sαλ−ρ)⊂Z(λ−ρ) Z(s_{\alpha}\lambda -\rho )\subset Z(\lambda -\rho )

(Prove this first for λ∈P\lambda \in P by using bb), and then in the general case by using Exerc. 12d).)1712d).)^{17}
