Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 253

Let a\mathfrak{a} be a semi-simple Lie algebra, xx an element of a\mathfrak{a}, and xsx_s the semi-simple component of xx. Show that, if ff is an invariant polynomial function on a\mathfrak{a}, then f(x)=f(xs)f(x) =f(x_s). (Reduce to the case in which ff is of the form x→x \rightarrow Tr ρ(x)n.\rho (x)^n.)
