Topologie algébrique, chapter II, § 5. Coégalisateur
One can give another description, sometimes more convenient, of the group . For this, let and define a law of composition in M by the formula
for and . One verifies that this law of composition is associative, that is an identity element, and that the element is the inverse of . It therefore endows M with a group structure. Moreover, the mapping defined by is a group homomorphism. Let be the unique group morphism of into M such that if and if ; one has .
The relations () and () show that every element of is the image under the homomorphism of an element of of the form , with and . Hence the homomorphism is surjective. One verifies moreover that the image under of an element of F(K) of the form or is equal to the identity element. Consequently, the kernel of the homomorphism is the smallest normal subgroup of M containing the images under of the elements of of the form ().
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
