Topologie algébrique, chapter III, § 3. Groupoïde de Poincaré
Let X be a topological space and let be an increasing family of subsets of X, indexed by a filtered ordered set I, such that every quasi-compact subset of X is contained in one of the . The canonical groupoid morphism
lim,
induced by the canonical injections of into X, is an isomorphism.
If , let us denote by the groupoid morphism induced by the injection of into . Since the mapping induced by by passing to the vertices is the injection and since the cover X, the mapping induced by by passing to the vertices is bijective.
Let and be points of X and let be a path joining to in X. The image of is a quasi-compact subset of X (TG, I, p. 62, Theorem 2), since is compact. There therefore exists an element such that the image of is contained in . Consequently, the mapping induced by by passing to the sets of arrows is surjective.
Let , let and be points of , let be paths joining to in ; let be a strict homotopy joining to in X. Since is compact, is a quasi-compact subset of X (loc. cit.) and there exists an element such that the image of is contained in . The paths and are strictly homotopic in ; fortiori, the path classes and have the same image in lim. Consequently, is injective.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
