Topologie algébrique, chapter IV, § 1. Espaces délaçables
a) Every covering of an unloopable space is unloopable.
b) Conversely, let be an étale and surjective mapping and suppose that E is an unloopable space. Then B is unloopable.
a) Let B be an unloopable topological space and let be a covering of B. Then the space E is locally arcwise connected. Let be a point of E, put , and let V be a neighbourhood of in B such that the canonical homomorphism is trivial. Let and denote the canonical injections. By hypothesis, the image of the homomorphism is reduced to the identity element. Since and is injective, the image of the homomorphism is reduced to the identity element. This proves that E is unloopable.
b) The space B is locally arcwise connected. Let be a point of B and let be a point of . Since is étale, there exists a neighbourhood U of in E such that induces a homeomorphism of U onto . Let V be a neighbourhood of in E contained in U such that the homomorphism is trivial, where denotes the canonical injection. Let be the mapping deduced from by passing to subspaces; it is a homeomorphism. Let also denote the canonical injection of into B. We have , hence is the trivial homomorphism. Since the homomorphism is an isomorphism, the homomorphism is trivial. It follows that the space B is unloopable.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
