Topologie algébrique, chapter IV, § 3. Groupes de Poincaré des groupes topologiques

A pointed topological space (X,e)(X, e) endowed with a continuous law of composition m:X×X→Xm: X\times X\rightarrow X is called a Hopf space, such that

(i) m(e,e)=em(e, e) =e;

(ii) there exist homotopies pointed at ee connecting the mappings x↦m(x,e)x\mapsto m(x, e) and x↦m(e,x)x\mapsto m(e, x) with the mapping IdX_X.

Properties (i) and (ii) are sometimes expressed by saying that ee is an identity element up to homotopy for the composition law mm.

It should be noted that there may exist several identity elements up to homotopy for a continuous composition law mm on a topological space X. For example, for X=RX =\mathbf{R} and m(x,y)=(x+y)/2m(x, y) = (x+y)/2, every x∈Rx\in \mathbf{R} is an identity element up to homotopy.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
