Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées
Let A be a normed algebra. For every , the sequence is convergent and its limit is equal to inf. Moreover, for every norm defining the topology of A, one also has
lim inf.
If is nilpotent, one has for every sufficiently large integer and every norm defining the topology of A.
Suppose now that is not nilpotent, and put . One has for every integer , and for all according to (1). Lemma 2, applied to the sequence log(), shows the existence of the limit and the formula inf.
Let be a norm defining the topology of A. There exist real numbers and such that
for all (EVT, II, p. 7, cor. 2). Consequently,
for all , whence, by passing to the limit, or by taking the greatest lower bound, the equality
lim inf.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
