Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

For every element xx of a normed algebra A, the real number

ϱ(x)=\varrho (x) = limn→∞∥xn∥1/n=_{n\rightarrow \infty}\|x^n\|^{1/n}= infn>0∥xn∥1/n_{n>0}\|x^n\|^{1/n}

is called the spectral radius of xx.

For every element xx of A, one has

ϱ(x)⩽∥x∥(3) \varrho (x)\leqslant \|x\| \tag{3}

(4) ϱ(xn)=ϱ(x)n\varrho (x^n) =\varrho (x)^n, for every integer n⩾1n\geqslant 1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
