Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a Banach algebra and xx an element of A. The series ∑n=1∞λnxn\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\lambda^nx^n, considered as a power series in λ\lambda, has radius of convergence ϱ(x)−1\varrho (x)^{-1}. If A is unital and if ϱ(x)<1\varrho (x)<1, then 1−x1-x is invertible and has as inverse ∑n=0∞xn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}x^n.

The series ∑n=1∞λnxn\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}\lambda^nx^n has radius of convergence

(lim supn→+∞∥xn∥1/n_{n\rightarrow+\infty}\|x^n\|^{1/n})−1=ϱ(x)−1^{-1}=\varrho (x)^{-1}

(cf. VAR, R1, p. 23, 3.1.4). Suppose that A admits a unit element. If ϱ(x)<1\varrho (x)<1, the series ∑n=0∞xn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}x^n is therefore absolutely convergent. Since

(1−x)(∑n=0kxn)=(∑n=0kxn)(1−x)=1−xk+1 (1-x)(\sum_{n=0}^kx^n)=(\sum_{n=0}^kx^n)(1-x) = 1-x^{k+1}

for every integer k⩾0k\geqslant 0, the element 1−x1-x is invertible and its inverse is equal to ∑n=0∞xn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}x^n.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
