Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a unital Banach algebra.

a) If x∈Ax\in A admits a left inverse (resp. right) yy, every element x′∈Ax'\in A such that ∥x′−x∥<∥y∥−1\|x'-x\|<\|y\|^{-1} admits a left inverse (resp. right).

b) The set of elements of A which are invertible (resp. left, resp. right) is open in A.

c) Let (xn)(x_n) be a sequence of elements of A admitting left inverses (resp. right)yny_n, and converging to an element x∈Ax\in A. If the sequence (yn)(y_n) is bounded, then xx is invertible on the left (resp. right).

It suffices to treat the case of left inverses; that of right inverses follows by considering the opposite algebra.

Let x,y,x′∈Ax, y, x'\in A be such that yx=1yx= 1 and ∥x′−x∥<∥y∥−1\|x'-x\|<\|y\|^{-1}. We have

∥1−yx′∥=∥yx−yx′∥⩽∥y∥⋅∥x−x′∥<1 \|1-yx'\|=\|yx-yx'\|\leqslant \|y\| \cdot \|x-x'\|<1

therefore yx′yx' is invertible: there exists z∈z\in A such that z(yx′)=1z(yx') = 1. Thus the element x′x' is left invertible with inverse zyzy. This proves assertion a) and assertion b) follows from it immediately.

Let (xn)(x_n) be a sequence of elements of A admitting left inverses yny_n, which converges to an element x∈x\in A, and such that the sequence (yn)(y_n) is bounded. If M⩾1M\geqslant 1 is a real number such that ∥yn∥⩽M\|y_n\|\leqslant M for all n⩾1n\geqslant 1, then we have ∥xn−x∥<M−1⩽∥yn∥−1\|x_n-x\|<M^{-1}\leqslant \|y_n\|^{-1} for nn sufficiently large, and therefore xx admits a left inverse according to a).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
