Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a normed algebra, let xx be an element of A. Let us denote by γx\boldsymbol{\gamma }_x and δx\boldsymbol{\delta }_x the mappings y↦xyy\mapsto xy and y↦yxy\mapsto yx of A into A. We say that xx is a topological zero divisor on the left (resp. right) if γx(\boldsymbol{\gamma }_x(resp. δx)\boldsymbol{\delta }_x) is not a homeomorphism of A onto γx(A)\boldsymbol{\gamma }_x(A) (resp. onto δx(A)\boldsymbol{\delta }_x(A)).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
