Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

According to TG, IX, p. 36, cor. 2,x2,x is a topological zero divisor on the left (resp. right) if and only if there exists a sequence (zn)(z_n) in A such that ∥zn∥=1\|z_n\|= 1 and such that xznxz_n tends to 0 (resp. that znxz_nx tends to 0) when n→+∞n\rightarrow +\infty.

A left zero divisor (resp. right) is a topological zero divisor on the left (resp. right). Suppose that A is nonzero and unital. A topological zero divisor on the left (resp. right) xx is not left invertible (resp. right). Indeed, if for example yx=1yx= 1 and if xznxz_n tends to 0, then zn=y(xzn)z_n=y(xz_n) tends to 0 and one cannot have ∥zn∥=1\|z_n\|= 1 for all nn.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
