Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a unital Banach algebra. Let xx be an element of A which is not left invertible. If there exists a sequence (xn)(x_n) of left invertible elements of A which converges to xx, then xx is a topological right zero divisor.

Let yny_n be a left inverse of xnx_n. By Prop. 3 (ii), ∥yn∥\|y_n\| tends to +∞+\infty. Let zn=∥yn∥−1ynz_n=\|y_n\|^{-1}y_n. We have ∥zn∥=1\|z_n\|= 1, and znxn=∥yn∥−1z_nx_n=\|y_n\|^{-1} tends to 0, hence znx=znxn+zn(x−xn)z_nx=z_nx_n+z_n(x-x_n) tends to 0. One then concludes with the aid of the remark following Definition 4.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
