Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a unital Banach algebra and let B be a full subalgebra of A. Then B is a full subalgebra of A.

In fact, let xx be an element of B‾\overline{B} invertible in A, and (xn)(x_n) a sequence of elements of B tending to xx. Then, for nn sufficiently large, xnx_n is invertible in A and xn−1x^{-1}_n tends to x−1x^{-1}. Since the subalgebra B is full, we have xn−1∈Bx^{-1}_n\in B, whence x−1∈B‾x^{-1}\in \overline{B}.

Let A be a unital Banach algebra and let (yi)i∈I(y_i)_{i\in I} be a family of elements of A. Let B be the full subalgebra of A generated by the elements yiy_i. Then B‾\overline{B} is the smallest closed full subalgebra of A containing the yiy_i. It is called the closed full subalgebra generated by the elements yiy_i.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
