Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a nonzero unital normed algebra. For every x∈Ax\in A, the spectrum SpA(x)_A(x) is nonempty.

Suppose first that A is complete. If one had Sp(xx) =∅=\emptyset, the resolvent of xx would be holomorphic in C\mathbf{C} and zero at infinity, hence identically zero (VAR, R., 3.3.6, p. 29). Since R(x,λ)=(λ−x)−1R(x, \lambda ) = (\lambda -x)^{-1} is invertible, it would follow that 1 = 0 and therefore that A={0}A =\{0\}.

In the general case, let A^\widehat{A} be the completed algebra of A; the relation SpA(x)=∅_A(x) =\emptyset would entail SpA^(x)=∅_{\widehat{A}}(x) =\emptyset, whence A^={0}\widehat{A} =\{0\} and A={0}A =\{0\}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
