Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a unital Banach algebra and xx an invertible element of A such that ∥x∥=∥x−1∥=1\|x\|=\|x^{-1}\|= 1. Then Sp(xx)⊂U\subset \mathbf{U}.

Let Δ be the disc with center 0 and radius 1 in C\mathbf{C}. By theorem 1 b) and the fact that ϱ(x)⩽∥x∥\varrho (x)\leqslant \|x\|, one has Sp(xx)⊂Δ\subset \Delta. Analogously, Sp(xx)−1^{-1} = Sp(x−1x^{-1})⊂Δ\subset \Delta, whence the corollary (cf. I, p. 2, remark 4).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
