Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a Banach algebra and x∈Ax\in A.

a) Sp′(x)'(x) is a compact subset of C\mathbf{C};

b) The spectral radius ϱ(x)\varrho (x) is the radius of the smallest closed disk with center 0 in C\mathbf{C} that contains Sp′(x)'(x);

c) In order that xx be quasi-nilpotent, it is necessary and sufficient that one have Sp′(x)={0}'(x) =\{0\}.

Assertions a) and b) result from th. 1 by considering the Banach algebra deduced from A by adjunction of a unit element. Assertion c) results from b).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
