Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 2. Algèbres normées

Let A be a unital Banach algebra and B a closed unital subalgebra of A. For every x∈Bx\in B, one has SpB(x)⊃_B(x)\supset SpA(x)_A(x), and the boundary of SpA(x)_A(x) in C\mathbf{C} contains the boundary of SpB(x)_B(x) in C\mathbf{C}. In particular, if SpB(x)⊂R_B(x)\subset \mathbf{R}, then one has SpB(x)=_B(x) = SpA(x)_A(x).

One has SpB(x)⊃_B(x)\supset SpA(x)_A(x) (remark 6 of I, p. 3). If λ\lambda is a point of the boundary of SpB(x)_B(x) in C\mathbf{C}, there exists a sequence (λn)(\lambda_n) of points exterior to SpB(x)_B(x) tending to λ\lambda. Then x−λnx-\lambda_n is invertible in B and tends to x−λx-\lambda, which is not invertible in B; hence x−λx-\lambda is a left or right topological zero divisor in B (Proposition 4 of I, p. 24), hence in A. Thus, λ∈\lambda \in SpA(x)_A(x). But since SpA(x)⊂_A(x)\subset SpB(x)_B(x), the complex number λ∈\lambda \in FrC_{\mathbf{C}}(SpB(x)_B(x)) cannot be interior to SpA(x)_A(x), and therefore belongs to its boundary.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
