Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives

Let A be a Banach algebra and let χ:A→C\chi : A\rightarrow \mathbf{C} be an algebra morphism (cf. I, p. 9). Then χ\chi is continuous, of norm at most 1. If A is unital and if χ\chi is a unital morphism, then χ\chi is of norm 1.

Let us prove that ∣χ(x)∣⩽∥x∥|\chi (x)|\leqslant \|x\| for every x∈x\in A. Replacing A, if necessary, by the Banach algebra generated by xx, we may suppose that A is commutative; then, χ∈X′(A)\chi \in \mathsf{X}'(A). For every x∈Ax\in A, one has χ(x)∈\chi (x)\in SpA′(x)'_A(x) (I, p. 9, No.o7^o7), hence ∣χ(x)∣⩽ϱ(x)⩽∥x∥(|\chi (x)|\leqslant \varrho (x)\leqslant \|x\|(I, p. 28, cor. 5), whence the first assertion.

If, moreover, A is unital, the equality χ(1)=1\chi (1) = 1 implies that ∥χ∥⩾1\|\chi \|\geqslant 1, whence the required equality.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
