Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives

For every x∈Xx\in X, let IxI_x be the set of f∈C0(X)f\in \mathscr{C}_0(X) vanishing at xx. Then x↦Ixx\mapsto I_x is a bijection of X onto the set of maximal closed ideals of C0(X)\mathscr{C}_0(X). These ideals are regular.

This follows at once from Prop. 1.

Let us denote by X′X' the Alexandroff compactification of X, that is, the compact space deduced from X by adjunction of a point at infinity ωX\omega_X (TG, I, p. 67 and 68). The algebra C0(X)\mathscr{C}_0(X) is identified with the Banach algebra of continuous complex-valued functions on X′X' vanishing at ωX\omega_X.

For every x∈X′x\in X', we denote by evx_x the character of C0(X)\mathscr{C}_0(X) defined by evx(f)=f(x)_x(f) =f(x) for every f∈C0(X)f\in \mathscr{C}_0(X).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
