Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives

Let A be a commutative Banach algebra. For every x∈Ax\in A, the function G(x)\mathscr{G}(x) belongs to the commutative Banach algebra C0(X(A))\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)) of continuous functions on X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) tending to 0 at infinity.

By definition (cf. no7^o7 of I, p. 9), the function GA′(x):χ↦χ(x)\mathscr{G}'_A(x) :\chi \mapsto \chi (x) is continuous on X′(A)\mathsf{X}'(A) and zero at 0. Since X′(A)\mathsf{X}'(A) is identified with the Alexandroff compactification of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) by cor. 1 of I, p. 29, the proposition follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
