Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives
Let A be a commutative Banach algebra and let .
a) The union of the set of values of and of is equal to Sp ;
b) If A has a unit element, the set of values of is Sp. In particular, in order that be invertible, it is necessary and sufficient that should not vanish.
Suppose that A admits a unit element. It is known that, for every , one has Sp. Conversely, let Sp. Then is not invertible, hence belongs to a maximal ideal of A. There then exists such that (th. 2 of I, p. 30), whence b).
Let us pass to the general case. Let be the Banach algebra obtained from A by adjoining a unit element; it is commutative. The set Sp is equal to Sp, that is to say to the set of values of on . Whence a).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
