Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives

Let A and B be commutative unital Banach algebras, h:A→Bh: A\rightarrow B a unital algebra morphism, not necessarily continuous. If X(h)\mathsf{X}(h) is surjective, then h(A)h(A) is a full subalgebra of B.

Let x∈Ax\in A be such that h(x)h(x) is invertible in B. For every χ∈X(A)\chi \in \mathsf{X}(A), there exists ξ∈X(B)\xi \in \mathsf{X}(B) such that χ=X(h)(ξ)\chi =\mathsf{X}(h)(\xi ), hence χ(x)=ξ(h(x))≠0\chi (x) =\xi (h(x))\not= 0. Prop. 6 of I, p. 37 then shows that xx is invertible in A, and hence that h(x)h(x) is invertible in h(A)h(A).

The necessary condition of the proposition is not sufficient, even if hh is isometric (I, p. 168, exerc. 14). One has nevertheless the following result:

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
