Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives
Let A and B be commutative unital Banach algebras, let be an element of A and let be an injective unital morphism (not necessarily continuous). Suppose that the full closed subalgebra of A generated by is equal to A. The following conditions are equivalent:
(i) is surjective;
(ii) is a full subalgebra of B;
(iii) Sp Sp.
(i) (ii) follows from prop. 10.
(ii) (iii) results from the formula Sp Sp Sp, valid since is a full subalgebra of B.
(iii) (i) by the formula (4) of No. of I, p. 6, we have the commutative diagram
Sp Sp
where the vertical arrows denote surjective mappings (I, p. 37, prop. 6) and is the canonical inclusion. Assumption (iii) means that is bijective. Moreover the surjective mapping Sp is bijective: in fact, for every characters and of A, the set is a closed full subalgebra of A. By hypothesis, therefore, one has = A if , that is to say if . The diagram then implies that the mapping is surjective.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
