Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives
Let Λ be a set and A a commutative unital Banach algebra. Let be a family of elements of A.
a) Suppose that the full subalgebra of A generated by the family is dense in A. The mapping of into defined by is a homeomorphism of onto the joint spectrum Sp ;
b) Suppose that the unital subalgebra of A generated by the family is dense in A. For every , the following conditions are equivalent :
(i) Sp ;
(ii) for every polynomial ;
(iii) for every polynomial .
a) The mapping of into Sp defined by the family is continuous and surjective. Let be characters having the same image, that is, such that for every . The characters and coincide on elements of the form , where , and is invertible in A, that is, on the full subalgebra of A generated by the elements (lemma 2 of I, p. 6). Since and are continuous (Theorem 1 of I, p. 29), they are therefore equal on A. This proves that is a continuous bijection of onto Sp, and hence is a homeomorphism since is compact.
b) Let us show that (i) implies (ii): if Sp, there exists such that for every . For every , we therefore have .
Assertion (ii) implies (iii) by reason of the inequality , valid for every by definition of the spectral radius.
Finally let us show that (iii) implies (i). Let be such that
for every P . Let be the unital subalgebra of A generated by the family ; its elements are of the form for . The majorisation (2) implies that the condition entails . There therefore exists a morphism of unital algebras from into such that for every . By (2), the morphism is continuous. It therefore extends by continuity to a character of , which satisfies Sp. This completes the proof.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
