Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives
Let be an integer. Let be a closed subset and V its polynomially convex hull.
a) Every bounded connected component of K is contained in V;
b) If , and if K is compact, then V is the union of K and of the bounded connected components of K.
Since is closed, its complement K is open, hence locally connected, so that each connected component of K is open. The maximum principle (VAR, R1, p. 29, 3.3.7) then shows that every bounded connected component of K is contained in V, which proves assertion a).
Now suppose and K compact. Let us denote by the union of K and of the bounded connected components of K, so that V by what precedes. The set is compact (Lemma 5). Let A be the commutative unital Banach algebra . Let be the identity function of and B the closed unital subalgebra of A generated by . We have Sp (Example 3 of I, p. 17), hence Sp is connected. Consequently we have Sp Sp (Cor. of Prop. 6 of I, p. 28). Since Sp is polynomially convex by Lemma 4, this shows that is polynomially convex and therefore that .
The second part of the proposition does not extend to the case (cf. Exercise 23 of I, p. 170).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
