Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 3. Algèbres de Banach commutatives
Let Λ be a set. Let K be a polynomially convex compact subset of . Let be the set of the restrictions to K of polynomial functions on , and let A be the closure of in the algebra .
Let ev be the mapping defined by ev, where ev is the character of A. Let be the family in A of the restrictions to K of the coordinate functions on , and let be the surjective mapping of onto Sp defined by the family .
Then we have K = Sp, and the mappings ev : K and are reciprocal homeomorphisms.
The mapping ev is the identity mapping of K. In particular, K is contained in the image Sp of .
Proposition 14 implies that Sp is the polynomially convex hull of Sp. Since, on the other hand, we have Sp (I, p. 42, example), which is polynomially convex by assumption, we deduce that Sp.
Since the unital subalgebra generated by the family of elements is dense in A, the mapping is a homeomorphism of onto Sp (Proposition 12 of I, p. 43, a)). The identity ev = Id then shows that ev is the reciprocal homeomorphism of .
For every subset of Λ, we denote by pr the canonical projection . Let W be a subset of and V its polynomially convex hull. Put pr. Since every element of is identified with an element of , the polynomially convex hull of is contained in pr.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
