Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires
Let A be an involutive algebra and B a maximal commutative involutive subalgebra of A. Then B is a maximal commutative subalgebra. In particular, if A is unital, then the algebra B is full.
In fact, let be an element permutable with B. Then is permutable with B. Write with and hermitian; the elements and are permutable with B (lemma 2). The subalgebra of A generated by B and is therefore commutative and involutive. Consequently, it is equal to B, so that . Analogously, one has , and therefore finally .
Let A be an involutive algebra. If is a linear form on A, the mapping on A is a linear form on A, denoted by . The mapping is a semilinear involution on . One says that is hermitian if . By lemma 1 of I, p. 95, every linear form on A has a unique representation where and are hermitian, namely and .
For a linear form to be hermitian, it is necessary and sufficient that the restriction of to be real-valued (proposition 1 of I, p. 95). The mapping is an isomorphism of the real vector space of hermitian forms onto the dual vector space of the real vector space .
In particular, (resp. ) will denote the set of hermitian characters of A (resp. the set of nonzero hermitian characters of A). A character is therefore hermitian if its restriction to is real-valued.
If A is commutative and if is a character of A, then is a character of A, and the mapping is a homeomorphism of onto .
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
