Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be an involutive Banach algebra.

a) For every x∈Ax\in A, one has exp(xx)∗=^*= exp(x∗x^*) ;

b) Let x∈Ahx\in A_h be a hermitian element. Then exp(ixix) is unitary.

In fact, since the involution on A is continuous, one has

exp(xx)∗=(∑n=0∞xnn^*=(\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}xn^n! )∗=∑n=0∞(xn∗)^*=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}(x\overset{*}{n}!)n=)^n= exp(x∗x^*)

for every x∈Ax\in A (formula (9) of I, p. 78). If x∈Ahx\in A_h, there follows

exp(ixix)∗=^*= exp((ixix)∗^*) == exp(−ix-ix) == exp(ixix)−1^{-1}

(formula (11) of I, p. 78).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
