Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires
Let A be a stellar algebra and let be the involutive algebra deduced from A by adjunction of a unit element. There exists a unique norm on extending that of A and making into a stellar algebra.
The uniqueness of such a norm results from prop. 2. Let us now prove its existence. Let denote the unit element of .
Suppose first that A possesses a unit element . The product of the normed involutive algebras A and is identified with and is a stellar algebra (example 5). The norm on extends that of A, whence the assertion.
Suppose henceforth that A does not possess a unit element. For every , let be the multiplication operator from A into A, and set . The mapping is a seminorm on . For all and in , one has . Moreover, by lemma 7, one has for all .
Let us show that the mapping is a norm on . Let and be such that = 0. If , the condition for every implies that is a left unit element in A. Analogously, the element is a right unit element. Thus the algebra A would then possess a unit element, contrary to the assumption. Hence . But then , and therefore .
Since A is complete and of codimension 1 in , the space endowed with the norm is complete. To conclude, it is therefore sufficient to show that one has for every (Lemma 6). One may suppose that . For every real number , there therefore exists such that and . Since , one has
It follows that , and therefore the involutive algebra endowed with the norm is a star algebra.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
