Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a star algebra.

a) If A possesses a unit element and if uu is a unitary element of A, then Sp(uu)⊂U\subset \mathbf{U};

b) If hh is a hermitian element of A, then Sp′(h)⊂R'(h)\subset \mathbf{R}.

One may suppose that A is nonzero. Let us prove assertion a). Let uu be a unitary element of A. One has ∥u∥=∥u−1∥=1\|u\|=\|u^{-1}\|= 1 (Remark 1), hence Sp(uu)⊂U(\subset \mathbf{U}(I, p. 26, Cor. 3). To prove b), one may suppose that A is unital (Prop. 3). Let hh be a hermitian element of A. Then exp(ihih) is unitary (Lemma 5 of I, p. 102). Thus, by Cor. 2 of I, p. 67 and a), one has exp(ii Sp(hh)) == Sp(exp(ihih))⊂U\subset \mathbf{U}, which means that Sp(hh)⊂R\subset \mathbf{R}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
