Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a unital star algebra and B a star subalgebra of A containing the unit element of A. Then B is a full subalgebra of A. In particular, one has SpB(x)=_B(x) = SpA(x)_A(x) for every xx in B.

Let xx be a hermitian element of B. Since SpB(x)⊂R_B(x)\subset \mathbf{R} (Prop. 4), Prop. 6 of I, p. 28 shows that SpB(x)=_B(x) = SpA(x)_A(x). In particular, xx is invertible in B if and only if it is invertible in A.

Let now xx be any element of B invertible in A. Then x∗x^* is invertible in A, and xx∗xx^* is invertible in A. Since xx∗xx^* is hermitian, what precedes shows that xx∗xx^* is invertible in B. This implies that xx is right-invertible in B. Analogously, one verifies that xx is left-invertible in B, and hence that xx is invertible in B. Thus, B is a full subalgebra of A.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
