Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a star algebra and let B be a star subalgebra of A. Then one has SpB′(x)='_B(x) = SpA′(x)'_A(x) for every xx in B.

By adjoining a unit element (prop. 3), this follows from prop. 5.

Proposition 6 (Fuglede–Putnam Theorem)

Let A be a unital star algebra. Let aa and bb be normal elements of A. If c∈Ac\in A satisfies ac=cbac=cb, then a∗c=cb∗a^*c=cb^*.

The hypothesis implies (wa)kc=c(wb)k(wa)^kc=c(wb)^k for every integer k⩾0k\geqslant 0 and every w∈Cw\in \mathbf{C}, hence ewac=cewbe^{wa}c=ce^{wb} (formula (9) of I, p. 78). Consider the function ff from C\mathbf{C} into A defined by z↦e−za∗cezb∗z\mapsto e^{-za^*}ce^{zb^*}. It is a holomorphic function on C\mathbf{C}, whose derivative satisfies

f′(z)=−a∗e−za∗cezb∗+e−za∗cb∗ezb∗ f'(z) =-a^*e^{-za^*}ce^{zb^*}+e^{-za^*}cb^*e^{zb^*}

for every z∈Cz\in \mathbf{C}. Since c=e−zacezbc=e^{-za}ce^{zb}, one can write

f(z)=e−za∗ezace−zbezb∗ f(z) =e^{-za^*}e^{za}c e^{-zb}e^{zb^*}

Since aa and bb are normal, the elements e−za∗eza=e−za∗+zae^{-za^*}e^{za}=e^{-za^*+za} and e−zbezb∗=e−zb+zb∗e^{-zb}e^{zb^*}=e^{-zb+zb^*} of A are unitary for every z∈Cz\in \mathbf{C} (lemma 5 of I, p. 102), hence of norm 1. Consequently, one has ∥f(z)∥⩽∥c∥\|f(z)\|\leqslant \|c\| for every z∈Cz\in \mathbf{C}. The function ff is therefore constant (VAR, R1, 3.3.6, p. 29), that is to say that f(z)=f(0)=cf(z) =f(0) =c for every z∈Cz\in \mathbf{C}. But then −a∗c+cb∗=f′(0)=0-a^*c+cb^*=f'(0) = 0.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
