Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a commutative star algebra. Every character of A is hermitian and the Gelfand transform is a morphism of star algebras of A into C0(X(A))\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)).

It is enough to prove the first assertion (proposition 7 of I, p. 38 and lemma 3 of I, p. 98). Let χ\chi be a character of A. For every hermitian element yy of A, one has χ(y)=GA(y)(χ)∈\chi (y) =\mathscr{G}_A(y)(\chi )\in Sp′(y)⊂R'(y)\subset \mathbf{R} (prop. 4 of I, p. 106). Consequently, the character χ\chi is hermitian (prop. 1 of I, p. 95).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
