Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a commutative star algebra. The Gelfand transform is an isometric isomorphism of the star algebra A onto the star algebra C0(X(A))\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)) of continuous functions on X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) tending to 0 at infinity.

The Gelfand transform is a morphism of involutive algebras of A into C0(X(A))\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)) (lemma 9). Let B be its image. It is an involutive subalgebra of C0(X(A))\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)). The elements of B separate the points of X(A)\mathsf{X}(A) by definition. Let χ∈X(A)\chi \in \mathsf{X}(A). There exists x∈Ax\in A such that χ(x)≠0\chi (x)\not= 0, hence f=G(x)f=\mathscr{G}(x) is an element of B such that f(χ)≠0f(\chi )\not= 0. By TG, X, p. 40, cor. 2, the subalgebra B is therefore dense in C0(X(A))\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)).

For every hermitian element yy of A, one has ∥G(y)∥=ϱ(y)=∥y∥\|\mathscr{G}(y)\|=\varrho (y) =\|y\| (prop. 7 of I, p. 38 and formula (2) of I, p. 104), whence, for every x∈Ax\in A, the equalities

∥x∥2=∥x∗x∥=∥G(x∗x)∥=∥G(x)‾⋅G(x)∥=∥G(x)∥2 \|x\|^2=\|x^*x\|=\|\mathscr{G}(x^*x)\|=\|\overline{\mathscr{G} (x)}\cdot \mathscr{G}(x)\|=\|\mathscr{G}(x)\|^2

Thus G\mathscr{G} is isometric, and its image B is therefore closed (lemma 8). One concludes that B=C0(X(A))B =\mathscr{C}_0(\mathsf{X}(A)).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
