Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a unital involutive algebra and let x∈Ax\in A be a hermitian element.

a) The element xx is positive if and only if ∥∥x∥⋅1−x∥⩽∥x∥\|\|x\| \cdot 1-x\|\leqslant \|x\|;

b) If ∥x∥⩽1\|x\|\leqslant 1, then xx is positive if and only if ∥1−x∥⩽1\|1-x\|\leqslant 1 ;

c) If xx is positive, then 1−x1-x is positive if and only if ∥x∥⩽1\|x\|\leqslant 1 ;

d) If xx is positive and if y∈A+y\in A_+ commutes with xx, then xyxy is positive.

The element xx is hermitian, hence normal. By considering the involutive subalgebra generated by xx, which is commutative, one is reduced to the case where the algebra A is commutative, that is, to the case where A = C0(X)\mathscr{C}_0(X) for a locally compact topological space X (th. 1 of I, p. 108). The first three assertions then follow immediately from example 1 above. Analogously, to now prove assertion d), one may consider the involutive subalgebra generated by xx and yy, which is commutative.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
