Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires
Let A be an involutive algebra. The set is a salient closed pointed convex cone in the real Banach space (EVT, II, p. 11).
Let be the star-algebra deduced from A by adjunction of a unit element. Since , it is enough to prove the proposition for . We may therefore suppose that A has a unit element.
We have . For every and every , we have Sp Sp, which implies that is a cone in the real Banach space .
To show that is convex, it is enough to show that if and are positive, then (EVT, II, p. 11, prop. 10). By homothety, it is enough to prove that if and satisfy moreover , , then the element is positive. Now we have
by assertion b) of lemma 12, and that same assertion then shows that is positive.
Finally, assertion a) of lemma 12 also implies that is closed.
Since is a pointed cone in , it is salient if and only if is reduced to 0. But if , we have Sp , hence , and since is hermitian (lemma 7, (2) of I, p. 104), whence .
Proposition 14 means that the relation “ ” is an order relation on (EVT, II, p. 13, prop. 13).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
