Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a stellar algebra. An element xx of A is positive if and only if there exists y∈Ay\in A such that x=y∗yx=y^*y.

Suppose that xx is positive. Let y=x1/2y=x^{1/2}; it is a hermitian element of A and one has y∗y=y2=xy^*y=y^2=x.

Conversely, let yy be an element of A and put x=y∗yx=y^*y. It is a hermitian element of A. Let us show that xx is positive. For this, let us write z=x−z=x^- and put w=yzw=yz. One then has

w∗w=z∗y∗yz=zxz=z(x+−z)z=−z3 w^*w=z^*y^*yz=zxz=z(x^+-z)z=-z^3

Since z⩾0z\geqslant 0, we have z3⩾0z^3\geqslant 0, and it follows that SpA′(w∗w)⊂R−'_A(w^*w)\subset \mathbf{R}_-. Let us write w=w1+iw2w=w_1+iw_2 where w1w_1 and w2w_2 are hermitian (Lemma 2 of I, p. 96). The elements w12w^2_1 and w22w_2^2 are positive. We have ww∗+w∗w=ww^*+w^*w= 2w12+2w222w^2_1+ 2w_2^2, and Prop. 14 therefore shows that ww∗=2w12+2w22+(−w∗w)ww^*= 2w_1^2+ 2w^2_2+ (-w^*w) is positive. Since SpA′(ww∗)='_A(ww^*) = SpA′(w∗w)'_A(w^*w) (I, p. 5, Prop. 1), which is contained in R−\mathbf{R}_-, we conclude that SpA′(w∗w)={0}'_A(w^*w) =\{0\}. Since w∗ww^*w is hermitian, this implies (Cor. 1 of I, p. 108) that ∥w∗w∥=ϱ(w∗w)=0\|w^*w\|=\varrho (w^*w) = 0, hence that z3=0z^3= 0. Since zz is hermitian, we have z=0z= 0. Thus, x=x+x=x^+ is positive.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
