Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a star-algebra and let x∈Ax\in A. The element x∗xx^*x of A is positive; one then sets ∣x∣=(x∗x)1/2|x|= (x^*x)^{1/2}. We have ∥x∥2=∥x∗x∥=\|x\|^2=\|x^*x\|= ∥∣x∣2∥=∥∣x∣∥2\||x|^2\|=\||x|\|^2, hence ∥x∥=∥∣x∣∥\|x\|=\||x|\|.

When xx is normal, we have also ∣x∣=f(x)|x|=f(x), where ff is the mapping of C\mathbf{C} into C\mathbf{C}, zero at 0, given by f(z)=∣z∣f(z) =|z|. In particular, when xx is hermitian, ∣x∣|x| coincides with the element defined by formula (3).

Suppose moreover that A is unital and that xx is invertible. Then ∣x∣|x| is likewise invertible, the element u=x∣x∣−1u=x|x|^{-1} is unitary and one has x=u∣x∣x=u|x| ("polar decomposition"; see also I, p. 139, no8^o8 for the case of endomorphisms of hilbert spaces).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
