Théories spectrales, chapter I, § 6. Algèbres stellaires

Let A be a star-algebra, and let xx and yy be hermitian elements of A.

a) If x⩽yx\leqslant y, then for every element ww of A, we have w∗xw⩽w∗yww^*xw\leqslant w^*yw. In particular, if y⩾0y\geqslant 0, we have w∗yw⩾0w^*yw\geqslant 0;

b) Suppose that A is unital. If 0⩽x⩽y0\leqslant x\leqslant y and if xx is invertible, then yy is invertible and y−1⩽x−1y^{-1}\leqslant x^{-1};

c) If 0⩽x⩽y0\leqslant x\leqslant y then ∥x∥⩽∥y∥\|x\|\leqslant \|y\|.

Let u=(y−x)1/2u= (y-x)^{1/2}. We have w∗yw−w∗xw=w∗u2w=(uw)∗(uw)w^*yw-w^*xw=w^*u^2w= (uw)^*(uw), and assertion a) follows from Theorem 2.

Let us prove assertion b). Suppose first that x=1x= 1. Let B be the unital *-subalgebra generated by yy. By the Gelfand isomorphism, yy corresponds to a continuous function ⩾1\geqslant 1 on the compact space X(B)\mathsf{X}(B). This function is therefore invertible and its inverse is ⩽1\leqslant 1. This implies that yy is invertible and y−1⩽1=x−1y^{-1}\leqslant 1 =x^{-1}. In the general case, we observe that 0⩽1⩽x−1/2yx−1/20\leqslant 1\leqslant x^{-1/2}yx^{-1/2} by a), hence the preceding case implies that z=x−1/2yx−1/2z=x^{-1/2}yx^{-1/2} is invertible and z−1⩽1z^{-1}\leqslant 1. Thus yy is invertible and y−1⩽x−1y^{-1}\leqslant x^{-1} by a) again.

To prove assertion c), one may suppose that A is unital (Proposition 3 of I, p. 105). Suppose first that yy is invertible. Put

√−1−1 \surd -_{1-1}

b=yb=y. By a), the conditions 0⩽x⩽y0\leqslant x\leqslant y imply 0⩽bxb⩽0\leqslant bxb\leqslant b−1yb−1=1b^{-1}yb^{-1}= 1, hence ∥b−1xb−1∥⩽1\|b^{-1}xb^{-1}\|\leqslant 1 by Lemma 12, c) of I, p. 116. We then have

∥x∥=∥b(b−1xb−1)b∥⩽∥b∥∥b−1xb−1∥∥b∥⩽∥b∥2=∥b2∥=∥y∥ \|x\|=\|b(b^{-1}xb^{-1})b\|\leqslant \|b\|\|b^{-1}xb^{-1}\|\|b\|\leqslant \|b\|^2=\|b^2\|=\|y\|

In the general case, for every real ε>0\varepsilon >0, the element y+εy+\varepsilon is invertible and 0⩽x⩽y+ε0\leqslant x\leqslant y+\varepsilon. By what precedes, we therefore have ∥x∥⩽∥y+ε∥\|x\|\leqslant \|y+\varepsilon \| for every real number ε>0\varepsilon >0, whence the result.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
